My first UPS (1998) was screaming every few minutes. I called APC to see what was wrong with their UPS. "Sir, do you have a laser printer plugged into the UPS?" Dug... Laser (and LED Okidata) printers and non-inkjet (laser) copiers pull too much current when their heating mechanism warm up. My old LaserJet 4 Plus would routinely keep itself warmed up for quick First Page Out standby purposes. I reluctantly plugged the LaserJet into a regular Surge Suppressor and the screaming went away. Some of my larger (1,500VA Belkin tower units) can apparently handle my laser printers, but Belkin still recommends to not use their UPS units with such intermittent high current demand units. I may still get a dedicated 1,500 unit for my HP Color LaserJet 3600n, as it would be a shame to lose that unit to a voltage drop situation. The rest of the laser/copier equipment is not such a big deal. The LaserJet 4 Plus is still working well, 8 years later, and if it gets whacked I have more than gotten my use value from it! My Ricoh photopier (floor unit, off lease purchase for $300!) works great, and I would hate to lose it. But my scanners and Laser printers would work for my purposes. Had I not been able to scarf it for $300 I would have never gotten a dedicated photocopier.
