The original ship date was announced as following the same general
time span as between Panther and Tiger: about 18 months. Since Tiger
shipped in spring 2005, that meant that Leopard would have been fall
2006. Here's Job's quote from the announcement at WWDC 2005:
Apple’s next major operating system release will be called Leopard,
said Jobs. “We’re not going to be focusing on it today, but we intend
to release Leopard at the end of 2006 or early 2007, right about the
time Microsoft expects to release Longhorn,” he said.
