You're missing the point. It doesn't matter if Murtha's ideas are sensible or absurd. The point is that instead of debating his actual proposals, the effort is going into smearing the man's military record as a way of discouraging him and others like him from opening their mouths.

Murtha served honorably in the military. You may think he's still a good man, or you may think that he's now a complete nutjob, or you may think anything in between, but that doesn't change what he did while in the service.

They did it with McCain, and it worked. So they did it with Gore, and it worked. So they did it with McClellan, and it worked. So they did it with Kerry, and it worked. So now they're doing it with Murtha. See a pattern?
