This is some inherited code.  Always the problem!

A form of Optimistic locking.

Anyway, it's a mix and mash.  Basically the tables are already opened up before 
we get to the form.  Then on a save button on the form there is an 'if rlock()' 
block which contains the code to update the record.  On top of that, the 
controlsource's have been set as well!

Not well thought out at all!

fwiw I have never found a case where setting your own locks works better
than the fox default behaviour.
