I don't know but they were wrong <gdr> ! Oxygen and silicon are the two
most common elements in the earth's crust and several others are more
common than nitrogen. In the bulk earth I believe that iron is the
commonest element. In the atmosphere alone, of course, nitrogen is the
commonest element. In the solar system (the universe ?) the commonest
element is hydrogen.
