I worry far more about closed-source software, where they may have
made these kinds of dumb decisions, but I can't tell, since I can't
read their source code.

Nor can you do anything about it, should you find out somehow.

The well-known mantra "Free as in freedom" means that you're free to make changes (or hire/find someone else to do it) to the code should you deem necessary.

There are well-known problems with various versions of Windows that MSFT has stated that they're simply not going to fix - I wrote about one of these with NT4 a few years ago - your ONLY recourse is to spend more money to upgrade to a more recent version. (Well, or leave the platform...) Since their software is closed, even if you could find a fix yourself (which, legally, you can't), you couldn't apply it without getting sued left and right either.
