What did IBM throw away? I've got code written 30+ years ago that will
STILL run on IBM machines, and the architecture they designed for
systems management remains at the top of the mountain in a class by
itself. 

IBM didn't do much/enough with the PC, true, but I'm pretty sure we're
going to see the day when they bite the bullet and make their OS
software run on machines the size of our PC's today. This is already
happening with an older version of MVS.
