assuming you want to count nulls and empties as zero and others as 1:
IIF(Nz([Trouser 1]," ") = " ", 0, 1)

or since Access SQL seems to like lots of brackets, you might need:
IIF( (Nz([Trouser 1]," ")) = " ", 0, 1 )

BUT
even though msdn says "You can use the Nz function to return zero, a
zero-length string (" "), or another specified value when a Variant is
Null."
don't try it via odbc:-

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Undefined function 'Nz' in
expression.
