I worked in Westchester for a long time (White Plains and Yorktown
Heights), but always commuted. A common refrain among IT folks I worked
with was that, at say $75k/yr, we couldn't afford to live where we
worked, outside of some lower-rent pockets like parts of White Plains,
that were substandard for the county in general. Towns like Bedford
Hills and Purchase are out of sight. The county is a beautiful places in
general though, and train service into NYC is excellent.

Places like Westchester (and Fairfield CT, as Hal pointed out) are
extraordinary, certainly not representative of the country as a whole.
