I am not so sure it is really just AJAX, but instead the trend to put
complete apps on a web and use a (or one of many) browser to use the web
apps.

The whole concept of using a browser as a unified tool to access a
unified content across the web is totally false.

Do I have the answer?  No.  But I do believe local applications on a PC
can be much more secure then "any" web browser and related technology --
especially the concept of "one web site (or all browsers) work on all
OS's in exactly the same way"...
