Too late.

I had a pro-photographer friend of mine do the shoot. He's unavailable for editing the shot right now...

I was hoping to put together a crude shot that I can use now.

Ah, Well...

I'm trying to "extract" the actual image from the picture by removing the background. I don't know what to call it. I've been through the documentation (RTFM) and tried a few things that sounded like they "might" be what I need, but they weren't.

In one photo program I used they were called "sprites" and I could layer the sprites and make a new photo. That's what I'm trying to do but I can't figure out how to select the "meat" of the photo and discard the background -- or make the background completely transparent? I just don't know...

Does this make sense to anyone???

I did something similar a few years ago for our family Christmas photo. I shot us against an orange background, and then used Gimp set orange to be transparent, then layered our photo over a variety of photos shot in our snow covered backyard. (Don't say it - the problem would have been getting everyone together at the same time after the snow had fallen, and before the dogs had tracked it up.) I think you may have erred in choosing white. It's very commonly in a lot of things. You want to chose something that's not likely to be in the picture, so that when you make it transparent, you don't leave a "hole" in your subject. Although, that can be fun sometimes.
