I am getting clients ring me every day about this problem. Today I had a laptop brought in to check whether they had put anything bad on his machine. And when I got home this evening I got a call from a client asking me whether this was a scam. Fortunately these two were not caught. But, a few weeks ago I had a really naïve gentleman who finally decided to ask for help after spending over £800 with them. They told him that they would check his computer every few week and only charge if they found something wrong. On the last occasion they told him that they had removed AVG antivirus as it was not compatible with windows 7 and installed the best antivirus in the world "Google Chrome" He asked about 100 people in his works canteen and none could tell him whether this was true, most had not heard of it. The only thing I can find in common with these clients is that they had all used BT help desk sometime in the previous week. (BT is our largest phone company and uses an Indian call centre."
I like Johns suggestion and will be telling my clients about this in future.
