Hi Pete Police officers do not carry guns as standard, as they do in America. Certain sections of the police force, however, do carry guns, such as the unit called SO19, who are drafted in to armed sieges, armed robberies etc. Also, for obvious reasons, the security that protects the Royal family and members of the cabinet are also protected by gun carrying officers. Taken as a whole, they are probably less than one percent of the entire police officers in the UK.
