Not sure.  It would have to do more out of the install, then just desktop
apps.  To gain any appeal it would need to have Web components also to gain
any notice.  To not have them would be guarantee the ignore factor it would
receive.

Nah. You're still thinking like an MS-head. If a "VFP" open source appeared on the scene, there would be hundreds, maybe thousands, of coders standing in line to build onto it's capabilities. Think of Python and the hundreds of libraries that you can pull in. In fact, if it was open source, it'd probably be immediately linked in to Apache, etc. Comms libraries would certainly be desirable, but there again the open-source community would probably have the code lined up ready to go.

And you certainly wouldn't want it to be just another 'web page' development system - you want something that can really give the users a good operational experience. Not another ugly, slow, frustrating browser app.
