Hi, Charles

I did a little spelunking on your behalf here, and it doesn't appear
that the file associations dialog will let you change the association to
"shortcut", only to things that are on their list.

The only answer I can see is in the registry.
Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, you need to find the entry for .lnk/ShellEx.
Mine has four sub-entries; all of them have long hex CLSIDs as names.
All four of them have the same value, also a CLSID:
    {00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

If you look up HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/<that long clsid> you will find
that its default value is "Shortcut" and its AppId is the same as its
name (at least, it is on my Win7 system).

If you've used RegEdit before, changing the .lnk/ShellEx values will
probably fix the problem. I would verify the CLSID is a "Shortcut"
before changing the .lnk settings.

Let's hope someone else knows of an easier way! <g>
