It can be a real timesaver...

I like this approach for transactional data such as accounting
applications where you close a time period i.e. Quarter, Year, and (at
least supposedly) no changes are made to that data.

Of course, because bean counters shall tinker with data forever, you
gotta have a 'recalc' utility, just in case...
