Here is what this generation thinks about the American dream. An essay
assignment by Jack Chambless, an economics professor at Valencia College, got
these results. Eighty percent of the students wrote one or more of these
comments.

1. "As human beings, we are not really responsible for our own acts, and so we
need government to control those who don't care about others."
2. Free tuition and health care
3. The government should hire everyone who cannot get a job.
4. The government should make the down payment for a house.
5. The government should give me enough money for my retirement.
6. The government should give some money to me (after taxing rich people).

When asked if their high school teachers talked about Adam Smith, economics,
and the principles on which our country was founded. He got back blank stares.
Schools no longer talk about Jefferson, Washington or Kennedy (Ask not what the
country can do for you but what you can do for the country.)

One of my peers told me a story about doing a job in Norwalk in a black
community. He watched the kids leave the school bus and one tried the door
handles of every car in the block hoping to find it unlocked so he could steal
anything inside as he walked home. The kid spotted him and pointed his finger
as though it were a gun and said he would kill him.

What a sad commentary on our society.
