Instead of multi threading a different option could be to have a different app running in the background or on another machine that does all the processing for you. Your main app puts an entry in a queue and the back office app does the select, creates the pdf and email and sends it. We do that here and it works great. Reports that take a while to run get processed in the background and don't hold the user up at all. There are lots of advantages to doing it that way.
