You may need the password for Windows XP and later workstations.

The password is to allow communication between the workstation and the 
domain server to tell the server the workstation is going bye-bye. That's 
only critical if you care if the domain server is able to keep its 
bookkeeping straight. Whether or not the workstation communicates with the 
server, removing it from the domain will cause the workstation to cease to 
expect to find the domain.

If users want the features of a Windows domain without using a Windows 
server, I would suggest you look into ClearOS. It's a version of CentOS 
with built-in domain server capability via SAMBA, and it includes a mail 
and web server. It's not quite as self-contained as a Windows server OS but 
the work-arounds are easy, and it works very, very well.
