1.  You could use a cursor instead
2.  you could try "delete file (fname)"
3.  you could try "run delete &fname"
4.  Try an explicit pathname in the filename
5.  try "run delete tmp*"

What you're doing looks like it should work.  If seen
the command not work before and not give any error
message, but I don't know why.
