Just got a big batch of messages from one of the lists I belong to, and
it got me to thinking of how many mailing lists there are out there on
the Internet. I bet there are.... dozens.
I belong to a list for marathon runners (ooo, how interesting, a mailing
list about RUNNING...), for example, but the one that sparked my
interest was the GIMPs list. Yeah, I know, that sounds like it's for
marathon runners too... but it's for a distributed computing project
aimed at finding large prime numbers.
Right now, the largest Mersenne Prime (a prime number of the form 2^N-1)
is just under 10,000,000 digits, and they're hoping to find the first
one over 10 million digits before EOY.
BTW, you can buy a poster that displays the entire prime number (yes,
all 9.9 million digits). It's a 3x4, and the numbers are printed in 1
point type. Neat.
Anyway.... I enjoy reading the various messages on this list,
particularly when a new prime is discovered (there are about 45 so far).
It sure is a lot more fun that the 'bikini-a-day' list I used to
belong to.
Wondering... what moderately-technically oriented mailing lists (not
directly related to programming) do y'all belong to?
