Just got into work and saw your post and that is exactly what I did last night. 
That, along with the save as class ... option when saving the form and 
selecting Data Environment only, partially sorts out my problem and has lead to 
a few more thoughts ... I'll keep the group posted.

Does it have to be inline code? The following two lines save the data 
environment of a form into a separate class:

ASelObj(la,2)
la(1).SaveAsClass("lib.vcx","classname")

Which you can then open with:

oDE = NewObject("classname","lib.vcx")
oDE.OpenTables()

Seems simple enough for me.
