There's a similar situation in the UK.  Often on Amazon you will see
'price has been fixed by publisher'.
It's a cartel IMHO.  The EU & US both have anti-cartels.

I've been reading a few self published books on my Kindle recently.
Quality varies, but there are some good 'ens.  The price is good.
