Except - the article mentions an attendance percentage - which leads me
to think that the letter was generated automatically - and goes out to
EVERY Kid who is below that percentage. 

Of course, if the student had been properly removed from the school
systems database, or properly flagged as deleted - then the computer
would not have seen them to begin with and not sent a letter...

Hi Al,

It looked to me that they sort-of wanted to look blameless themselves. 
The people blaming the computer are responsible for what it does,
though.

"They" should know you have to go through a mailing list before sending 
anything out after a student dies?
