Turns out that it is an unrelated latest update of Adobe Flash that has hosed 
both my Firefox and IE browsers.

Uninstalling the latest update and rolling back has cured the problem.

These damned Adobe updates do my head in... no wonder Mr Jobs was anti Adobe!

Thanks anyway you guys... just beware !
