Well - My guess is that as the Jet is moving really fast - its pushing thru all this air. And, as it approaches the speed of sound - the air gets really collapsed or is bunching up - and, when it hits the Sonic Boom - I think its like its Breaking Thru that massive amount of compressed air. And, I think it causes some strange effect within the bunched-up/compressed air - which causes it to be visible. I've never seen it in person - but, I suspect it looks pretty cool. Of course, this is just my ponderings and not based upon anything in particular that I have read...
