Well - My guess is that as the Jet is moving really fast - its pushing
thru all this air. And, as it approaches the speed of sound - the air
gets really collapsed or is bunching up - and, when it hits the Sonic
Boom - I think its like its Breaking Thru that massive amount of
compressed air. And, I think it causes some strange effect within the
bunched-up/compressed air - which causes it to be visible. I've never
seen it in person - but, I suspect it looks pretty cool. Of course, this
is just my ponderings and not based upon anything in particular that I
have read...

I also agree that you are not seeing a sonic boom.  You are probably
seeing moisture in the air.  Use to see it all the time off of Jones
Beach and either the Thunderbirds or the Blue Angles air shows.
