The space between adjacent letters is controlled by KERNING.  Depending on what 
software you are using, you may or may not have control of kerning.

In Word you can set SPACING to expanded or contracted on the fonts menu 
(advanced).  That is pretty much the same as kerning.

The particular font that you use is not as significant as the column width you 
are setting.  If there is a lot of space between words, it is usually because 
you are using long words.  You could change the column width very little (make 
it bigger) repeatedly until you get a better result.  You can also turn on 
hyphenation but if the column is too narrow, you well get a lot of hyphenated 
words and that does not read well.  You can also change the type size a very 
small amount (decrease).  It is always a combination of many variables; there 
is usually never a single correct answer to this kind of situation.
