You will still need a valid activation code. Which as far as I can tell comes from the attempt to get windows. Then again maybe it's on the disk as usual. One thing though, it is worth trying the online tester in case the PC is no good. I updated 6 of mine but one of the others using win7 will not update because the processor does not have the exclude bit (Pentium 4 3.0 sinlge core). Win 8 uses that for virus control, and probably software control. Al
