Physics hijacked. Historically Physics Theories have held their ground for only a tiny instance in the time continuum, before being replaced. Yet they have led mankind to reveal many wonderful and useful effects hidden in nature, the quantum hall effect for example.
Speculation disentangled from experimentation can be fun and is a well established is part of the mother science, Mathematics, for example Reimann's contributions to Einstein's tool kit.
Academics need their funding just as much as physicists, that said, Ed is right !.
