The area was MB's version of the "other side of the tracks", where she
had found a cheap parking spot to rent with money someone gave her.
There was talk of something going on with illegal immigrants a few
buildings away, but we were standing on private (rented) property at
least a few buildings away with no 'action' in sight, as I said, just
talking. At first, I thought it was a joke her friends were playing on
us. In my opinion, they had no right whatsoever to do that. I visited
two lawyers in the area regarding the incident and was told there was no
way any of them were going to fight the local police dept unless, of
course, there was a lot of money involved.

The other part about MB is the pull-overs. Very often when I drove the
length of 17B from one end of MB to the other, I'd see someone pulled
over for something. No, that didn't happen to me, but only because I
drove the straight and narrow every time (again, thus my warning).

In 'fairness', Ft Lauderdale was worse, with their radar detectors all
over the place. Maybe it's because these are vacation spots and 'easy
pickings', but I spent a few months in vacation areas along the Maine
coast and didn't see anything like that there. In fact, in Maine, I
wondered what would happen if one needed a cop, since they seemed to be
so rare.

I distill all this to an "authoritarian attitude" that can creep into
agencies. I remember working in the Naval Prison, and how a few guys
that worked there really got into the role. Remember the Stanford prison
experiment?

The thing with me is that I really don't like 'authority figures'. Sure,
people can't go around hurting other people, so there's a real need for
police to protect us (and thank you for doing that!), but there's a line
between protecting and domineering that some people - and communities -
have crossed, and that's what I saw in MB and Ft Lauderdale.
