Kurt,

You might try booting the machine from a cd, floppy,  or usb drive to see
if the machine itself is stable.  I have had several machines lately with
motherboard or processor issues where they work very slowly and fail at
random points.  Sometimes it is a power supply that causes this behavior
and sometimes something on the motherboard.
