I have a client with an Optiplex 330 server that refuses to boot Windows but runs Ubuntu just fine. Apparently there is a system board interrupt that Windows uses and Ubuntu does not. That server has inherited the system board from my personal workstation. (I had deliberately purchased a matching system at the time I installed the server so that in the event of a failure I could do an immediate swap to minimize downtime.) Now I want to replace my personal machine with a Dell Optiplex with significantly more horsepower that still uses the same RAID controller. This should allow swapping the mirrored drives from my client's box if there is another failure. I called Dell's Tech Support and talked to a tech there. He said that the entire Optiplex line uses the same RAID controller chipset so any box should work. I told him the technician who worked on the system did not believe there was a chance that the conroller in the 330 would match one from a current machine but he insisted they would. He did, however, indicate that it would be a better idea to use another 330 system board. My questions are:
Can anyone verify that Dell RAID arrays can be moved between different Optiplex models without rebuilding? Any recomendations for an affordable Dell box (Ebay) to use for occasional CAD work?
