It seems to me this is the same pricing strategy as the Google Nexus. They don't want to sell many, and they don't have the wherewithal to support them.
They put this out at a high price tag. They'll get rave reviews in the press. They'll pour money into (pretty darn good) advertising. Some will buy them (there's one born every minute, after all...) Then Dell and Lenovo and HP will have to decide if there's enough market demand for a cheaper product and they can easily beat MS' high pricetag. When you complain that Microsoft fails at half the things they do, I think you fail to appreciate that that is a .500 batting average.
