I never had kids but I have seen it on others when a split happens. Its almost like a competition to see who can spend the most.

This comment immediately reminds me of Christmas' past when my kids
would get WAY TOO MANY gifts from all of my ex-wife's relatives.  I
mean, it was disgusting.  The kids were overwhelmed.  They didn't know
what to play with first.  What you might think was "a perfect Christmas"
for a kid wasn't.  I remember getting maybe 5-7 things and that was more
than plenty.  I didn't have the overload that my kids' experienced...and
I was glad for that.
