Hey there Jim,

Re: HW - my suggestion is to get as much Bang for the Buck as you can. Get the most powerful CPU U can afford, with the most RAM U can afford - and, if you can get something that also has a Flash HD - that may also help! As for Video card - I always figured it was MORE important with regards to 3D (both 3D animation content product - as well as Gaming - but, then, theoretically - you should get Quadra vs. GeForce, respectively). Sure, get the most powerful card you can get in your machine, based upon what you can afford.

Re: SW - Personally - I use Sony Vegas. I originally bought it some years ago - I think the version I got was around $99. Then, over a year ago - Sony was offering for a limited time a package deal that included Several of thier Apps -including Acid (which I had owned and used in the past - and which I had NOT Upgraded for Years!). So - I took the deal. I think it still possible to get Sony Vegas Mvie Studio HD - which is what I have now - for around $99 - but, ah - don't quote me on that.

Another option I heard about a while ago was Premiere. They have a more consumer level version - like PS. I bought Photoshop Elements some years ago - at like $99 - as it was WAY Cheaper than the full version (like $700). So, I was surprised to hear that there was also a Premiere Elements (I THINK that is the name of it) - which I believe can also be had for around $99.

As for MS Movie Maker - U Kidding? U actually like it? Man - I tried it once or twice and I found it to be CRAP! But, coming from dabbling in Premiere YEARS - and now Vegas for many years now - I could not possibly work with something so Non-Standard (a lot of video editing SW has a kind of standard interface) - and something so Crappy and Limited as Movie Maker! (Although - I must admit - I think the last time I tried it was under WinXP at my last job).

YMMV...
-K-

In the market for a new pc (desktop, not laptop) to edit my home videos.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a particular brand/specs to fill this
bill. I had a custom built years ago, but wondered if there was something
more off the shelf that could handle this job.

The video card is important too, Nvidia has about 100 different offerings,
and it's hard to figure out the best one in the GeForce line.

And, I've used a number of different software packages over the years (Adobe
Premier/Nero/Pinnacle, etc.,etc), have never been happy with any of them,
and have reverted back to Window Live Movie Maker. Is there a newer updated
software package priced reasonably (between,price,100,200)?

I guess I'm asking a lot, but it would give me some comfort to hear what
hardware/software others have experience with when creating & editing video.

TIA

Jim
