I'm not Paul, but still... 2010 the conference was great! Lots of inspiring
talks, lots of tools mentioned that I since started using such as Balsamiq
or Jira, nice conference party, opportunities to network for those who are
interested. It kind of felt like a TED conference for developers. I was
really looking forward to the 2012 conference (2011 was too close to SWFox
to attend).
But, boy, was I disappointed.
The conference grew a lot and had to move from an auditorium style room to
a typical large conference room with multiple screens (it's a single slot
conference, you don't choose which session you attend). The sheer number of
attendees made any event incredibly noisy down to the point that it was
useless talking to anybody.
Speakers were less professional and changed the topic of their sessions at
will. The content used to be about a variety of topics. This time there was
definitely a focus on SEO, venture capital, and growth of cloud based
services, neither of which is particular interesting to me. I also started
to notice the forming of a regular speaker clique. Some speakers seem to
take it for granted to speak there no matter what they are talking about.
Some are great, but others aren't.
Considering that conference fee, flight and hotel add up to several
thousands, I didn't feel I got that much worth from the conference. 2010
was different and I happily paid.
Therefore this year I won't go. I fear the conference is outgrowing itself
and moving into a (for me) wrong direction.
Christof,
After reading their website, they must have received and heard a LOT of
negative feedback and are trying to return to their successful formula.
Read that page if you didn't already.
Thanks for confirming what I suspected, Christof. (Yeah, I had a
feeling of that after reading the page.)
