     Well, I would except that I solved the problem.

     I had the code structured as follows:
msgsvc.prg:
     Steven Black's code with no modifications
msgbox.prg:
my test program and the necessary adjustments to use msgsvc.prg including a class inheriting from a class in msgsvc.prg.

I broke out msgbox.prg into msgboxt.prg (a test program) and msgbox.prg (the necessary adjustments). This worked.

Not getting useful error messages and sometimes no error messages at all was the major difficulty in dealing with this.

I still do not know why the first run would work, but that later runs would not. Caching, perhaps, of classes?
