MariaDB is a fork of MySQL so that you had an option rather than be only left with MySQL under Oracle's supervision of it.

I use MariaDB here at the day gig for some stuff and it's great. Totally free of course too. Everything I wrote when I was using the Sun MySQL backend still works great in MariaDB. I don't think I've had to change a thing.
