I've got a pretty fast machine and do on-line gaming (much less demanding than 1st-person shooters). I have a Radeon 5670 (three-year old mid-range model) that has worked very well. I've done some video editing and it worked flawlessly.

My criteria were 1) price <= $125, 2) single-slot with no requirement for external power cables, 3) 1 GB memory. The guy at Fry's told me that if you're rendering a lot of objects (i.e., landscape, multi-characters, etc) the memory was more important than the GPU speed. I definitely didn't want a power-hog/heat-generator.

Yes, both nVidia and Radeon define the GPU line and then license manufacture to multiple manufacturers. I think you'll find that the absolute cheapest version is probably not the one to get. <g>
