The font's make a very big difference.

We were using OCR in the navy around 82.

Only way we could get the best results was the OCR font.
Something along the line of courier

I don't think there's such a thing as 100% accurate OCR; that's one of the
caveats that need to be made known to people who get enthusiastic about
document management systems. (Sadly, it's too late in my case; they already
bought one, and I, no doubt, will be expected to compensate for its failings
at some point down the line.)

However, I have gotten pretty good results with good old Capture Perfect,
the bundleware that comes with high-end Canon scanners. The results can be
improved by increasing the scan resolution (with a sacrifice in ppm, of
course).

Also, the stuff made for blind people, such as OpenBook, works quite well
for most things.

Nothing is going to do a good job with handwriting though.
