Basic for Android is EXCELLENT. There are hundreds of add on libraries for camera, ocr, test speak/recognition etc etc, the author is open to all suggestions and the support system (frorums etc) are almost as good as here. I converted our stock take application which had originally been written to run on PDA's in less than 2 days and that was including the learning curve. I was suitably impressed and wouldn't even consider going to use the java dev system directly.
You can easily wrap any java library into a B4Android library if you know a little java and I have done this with a few libraries now I am more at ease with java. The cost for the standard B4Android is free to try out on an unlimited basis with the only restriction being that you can't use external libraries. You can get a feel for the language using this and then the dev system is about 70 dollars for a license and only a small amount more for a 3 year unlimited upgrade license. Good value and recommended. Being android, the support of SQLite database is built in to the language so SQL access is simple, as is access via ODBC from B4Android to external databases.
