I wasn't blaming Filezilla for FTPs shortcomings, Alan. :-)

If you go look at some of the threads on this topic the developers have clearly 
(no pun intended) indicated that security is the user's problem, and there are 
no plans to add any kind of encryption or other useful obfuscation to the site 
manager settings, which are stored in plain text (XML IIRC) in a known 
location. Knowing the nature of open source development, I'm sure this is 
probably some deep philosophical statement on the inherently insecure nature of 
FTP. If you don't save any creds then you don't have to worry about this 
particular design choice in Filezilla. If you do use the site manager and 
continue to use Filezilla, you need to be aware that there are active exploits 
out there which will suck out all your saved creds and then do what they will 
with them.

FileZilla is just an FTP client, it's hardly to blame for the inherent 
insecurity of FTP. But absolutely, don't transmit secure info over vanilla FTP.
