I am no big fan of AVG, having seen a few machines get invaded with Malware
that were running AVG. But, for a free AV solution for those folks who
simply do not have the bucks to spend on AV/Adware/Spyware protection I have
recommended Comodo in conjunction with Spybot (with its "Tea Timer" Resident
protection option enabled). Comodo is found at www.comodo.com. I do not
use it for my own machines, but thus far it has seemed reliable on PCs used
by folks seeking a free solution. Okay, not to incite a Flaming, but I
still use Symantec Corporate AV, v-10.0.1 for full time protection. If I
come across a machine that needs to get cleaned up I use Webroot's
SpySweeper, CA's AntiSpyware, Spybot, Ad-Aware, then install either a Norton
AntiVirus/Internet Security or Symantec Corporate solution. After I perform
the cleanup with each product I remove it (other than the Norton/Symantec
app). For pre-Win 2000 O/S I keep running Spybot with Tea Timer enabled in
conjunction with an earlier version of Norton/Symantec that is capable of
working with pre-Win 2000. Seems to do the trick.

What I find interesting is the Symantec Corporate AV (which covers off
Spyware, Adware, etc.) can be had for less than the Norton line of products,
yet will run on Client or Server class O/S, and allows for centralized
management of protected machines in a network.
