My suspicion is that the retained credentials are interfering with the
ability of the Mac to log onto the server anew. I haven't read the ZDNet
article you referenced, but my first inclination would be to try to delete
the credentials. Unlike MS and the Registry, OS X uses something called a
Keyring to securely store user name and password credentials. A web search
for 'deleting smb credentials keyring Mavericks' might help...

I think we're in agreement on this. If I were to walk into your facility
and could access the wireless network, I would see the shares on my Android
tablet, too. Without a domain account, though, that's all I could see.

Well, with all due respect to Microsoft, SMB2 is a poorly-implemented,
under-documented, buggy protocol that resulted, whether intended or not
("Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by incompetence"
gets suspicious after so many invocations), in causing many, many, many 3rd
party tools, devices, and machines to break badly and ungracefully.
This morning I have confirmation of that.
