It's still playing with fire. Since IE and its rendering engines (HTML, XML, GIF, etc.) and its runtime engines (Flash, JavaScript, Java, VBScript) are "an intrinsic part of the operating system," it difficult to firewall all of that functionality from being invoked. So many applications invoke part of IE (HTML Help, Explorer, Active Desktop) that leaving any of it not patched to the latest version is a liability. However, maybe I could run it in a VM without any access to the network or Internet. I don't use the online banking features, so I might get away with that.
