Probably way before your time, but if memory serves me right, he came out
with a program (turbo pascal) I think it was, and sold it for around $45
bucks each and got his start that way.
Then think about quicken.
Every year they release a new version for 20 bucks or so, and every year,
lots of people buy the new version.
Same thing happened with that accounting program (can't remember the name,
but I believe he started godaddy.com)
bottom line, if you can come up with a program that has a very large client
base, even for a few bucks, you can make a reasonable living.
