Man-Wai,
The problem with the built in scanning in Win 7 is that it only supports 
current tech scanners and not any of the older ones. Vuescan has worked on some 
really old scanners that I have come across with no problem at all and no 
driver requirement either.

I do agree a little with your comment about free OCR software as none of is as 
good as the commercial offerings of which my favourite is ABBYY fine reader
