Works in MariaDB 5.5.33a. Does NOT work in MySQL 5.5.37. Here's the

Ideas?
(The real SQL is extracting the first 2 characters of a HHMM time
string; I'm trying to get the hours and minutes values. MySQL doesn't
have a VAL() function.)
