If you haven't tried it already, try dropping the firewall altogether to
see if the ftp functions work.

Something about passive transfers, and blocking responses coming from the
server, says my dusty old memories of wresting with ftp.

Of course, the better solution is to use _anything_ else.

Not criticizing Dave's code, mind you, but the elderly ftp protocol and
security model.
