Mike and Ted, I do see where Linux is the biggest player, but the WSJ article I cited has this mention:
"Mike Schutz, a general manager working on Microsoft's cloud-software services, said the company has worked with container technologies for years and moved to incorporate the technology into Windows computer servers recently in response to interest from customers and software developers. "For us, it's all about the customers," Mr. Schutz said." Googling "microsoft containers" led to this topic http://azure.microsoft.com/blog/2014/10/15/new-windows-server-containers-and -azure-support-for-docker/ It seems this should have some bearing on Mike's interest. BTW, I never did like how VM has been implemented on PC's, coming from IBM-land where VM is a complete OS that doesn't require a host OS, but maybe containers are a better way of handling this then VMWARE. Bill Exactly! Thanks Ted...I've been reading about containers so long now my eyes are getting crossed. It looks GREAT for a Linux solution, something like Apache or a LAMP solution. Once again, this is making me feel old. :( Mike Ted Roche wrote: > On Sun, Nov 9, 2014 at 1:23 PM, Mike Copeland <[email protected]> wrote: > >> My question is whether containers can be of use for my situation. >> > Short form: I don't think so. :Containers like Docker are the latest > repackaging of chroot folders -- essentially, you run the same kernel > and OS utilities, but are isolated from changing the outer software. > Ideal if you're running a lot of Linux apps with finicky and different > runtimes -- install each in their own container.
